Montecristo’s Projects in El Transito and Tecolote
The developers of Montecristo beach Resort in Nicaragua have "adopted" the town of El Tránsito and initiated projects to help raise the standard of living among the local population. They are donating building materials, providing educational opportunities, sponsoring youth programs and encouraging business, thus making a significant contribution to the local culture and economy. A medical doctor was recently hired to visit the community three times a week and a campaign started to fix the roofs of homes in the community.
One of the most recent projects by Montecristo involves a group of women from El Transito with desire to develop themselves in the chicken business. These women have received funds in order to start breeding chicken so they could sell eggs and meat to the community. The amount loaned was divided between the 23 women and they will have to pay the money back, but not to Montecristo, the money loaned will be invested in another social project to be developed in their community, so everyone around them is hoping this business succeeds.
One of the main programs developed by Montecristo is a Roofing Program in El Transito and Tecolote: Montecristo engineers inspect the homes of local people to determine their roofing needs, then, they donate the roofing material and work with them to fix or replace their roofs.
El Transito and Tecolote Food and Medical Programs: Montecristo has appointed a village “council person” that maintains a census of the families (amount of adults and children – their ages and sexes). Many of the people of these towns are unemployed or can’t make ends meet – the project gives a monthly food donation according to size of the family. A medical doctor has been hired that makes regular trips to see the people of these towns and provide courtesy health care and some surgeries and hospitalizations.
Projects to be developed in the future include a local bakery and a clothing manufacturing business.
Ongoing needs
Resources to improve the roofing conditions of many homes and also to make food donations. The people in El Transito, like most communities in Nicaragua, don’t have access to many medical services. They need quality doctors and medications in order to improve their life condition.
Amounts that can make a difference:
- An average home in el Transito or in Tecolote can be completely re-roofed for $150.00
- For $30, a complete food basket with many necessary supplies can be purchased.
